Richard Jefferson Speaks with The Brotherhood
Jefferson spoke with The Brotherhood, a group aimed at mentoring young students, to share his experiences.

The Brotherhood had the pleasure of having an open discussion with NBA Star, Richard Jefferson. This was a unique experience for the boys of The Brotherhood that attend Overland High School and Prairie Middle School because most kids don’t get the opportunity to get to know a professional athlete as a person. Richard Jefferson shared his experience of what he did throughout his life to become the man he is today. “Be more than what people expect you to because that’s where you’re going to find success in your life, that’s where you’re going to find true happiness constantly trying to be better than you were the day before”, said by Richard Jefferson.
The students were able to interact with Richard Jefferson during and after the open group discussion. Overland High School senior, Ramiree Quick was engaged and had multiple questions for Richard Jefferson throughout the conversation. “Something that caught my key was when Richard said he only had one goal in life and that was to make it to the NBA. This was interesting to me because I'm used to society always telling me that I have to have more than just one plan for my future. Just in case my first one doesn’t work out but hearing Richard Jefferson saying that he only had one plan showed me that it’s possible to make your dreams come true as long as you put forth the effort and work hard in life”, said Overland High School senior, Ramiree Quick. Ramiree is graduating high school in May and will go on to play football and pursue a degree at Hasting College in Nebraska this upcoming fall.
Richard Jefferson, having open ears and wanting to get to know our students made this a successful discussion as well. Not only did he tell us about himself but he wanted to hear from the students to learn about the trials and tribulations that they are going through as young Black men. Overland High School junior, Michael Appiah-Brefo said,” We were able to tell him how we feel about The Black Lives Matter Movement and not only did we learn from him but I feel like he was able to learn a few things from us.”
